A four-story building collapses in Lagos, taking lives and trapping others.

A four-storey building has collapsed in Lagos, with occupants trapped, and some feared dead.

According to PlanetLagos, an incomplete storey building housing the Equal Rights Restaurant collapsed on Saturday morning at Oremeta Street, Ojodu, Lagos.

Rescue efforts are underway to save those buried beneath the debris, and the incident has been confirmed by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

The precise number of casualties has not yet been released by authorities, but emergency personnel are working nonstop, and the scene is still chaotic.

According to early reports, the building was reportedly under construction, which raises questions regarding its structural soundness and compliance with safety standards.

Witnesses reported a sudden collapse in which workers and bystanders were engulfed by debris.

Given the increased attention being paid to the state’s frequent building collapses, the Lagos State Government has promised to look into the cause. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency reports that there were 19 such incidents in Lagos in 2024 alone.

Heavy-duty equipment has been deployed by LASEMA and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to support rescue operations. While local hospitals wait to treat survivors, community members congregate and offer prayers for those who remain trapped.

The ongoing problem of uncontrolled construction in Lagos is highlighted by the incident, which is reminiscent of a collapse in Ikota in January 2025 that left two people dead and five injured.

More information about the rescue effort and the ultimate number of people killed in the catastrophic collapse is awaited by the public.
